Maple Ridge officially formed an Ultimate League in 2006, encouraging new players to try it out and a few grizzly veterans to show them the ropes. In our first few years, the focus was on developing the skills of our players and the understanding of the game in a season that ran from April to August. As people became more familiar with how this wacky sport is played, our league grew – to over 120 players in 2011. Today, we have 8 teams that play every Sunday night for 18 weeks starting in mid April. We send teams to provincial tournaments in Kamloops, Kelowna, Vancouver, Cortez Island, and Victoria each year as well as hosting our own Hat Tournament each summer.

What makes Maple Ridge Ultimate different than any other league?

We host a weekly clinic on Thursdays so that all the players in the league get a chance to practice together and talk strategies – not only does this provide more opportunity to play Ultimate, but it also integrates a brand new player into this league in a comfortable and less intimidating manner.

We create new teams each year in order to maintain a balance of Spirit, competitiveness, leadership, and commitment among the 8 teams - this becomes obvious in our fairly even standings throughout the season, as each week any team can beat another.

We focus on Spirit and the enjoyment of the game - it has taken years of work to create an environment of competitive, talented play, balanced with sportsmanship and mutual respect among all the players.

We welcome guys and girls of all ages – from 16 to 50 years of age, our league is very diverse!

We see Ultimate as more than just a 2 hour game – pub nights, tournaments, disc golf games, and food and drinks after every game has shaped our league into an amazing social network!

We receive praise and compliments from teams across the province about how Spirited we are and how a hard-fought game can still be a lot of “fun” – in a time where spirit continues to decline in many other leagues, we play Ultimate the way it was traditionally conceived decades ago. After all, it’s just a game.
