Ultimate Free Clinic
On Sunday, March 21st at Thomas Haney SS we are offering a FREE CLINIC to the public. It will be advertised in the local paper over the next few weeks. You are all invited to come out and shake off the rust after a long winter. It will be from 11:00AM to 3:00PM and will focus on some basic concepts of throwing, catching, cutting, and defending. The idea is to bring out a few people from the general public BEFORE the registration to see how much fun it is – hopefully some will sign up! We’ll finish up with a scrimmage! Hope to see you out.
Field Change
Sunday night games this year will be played at Merkley Park (behind Maple Ridge Secondary School – our website will have a map). The reason for changing from Thomas Haney to Merkley was that there are washrooms available, more shade for the hot summers, and we never have to complete with angry softball teams. Thursday practices are still at Alexander Robinson.
Clinics and Practices
As we do every year, our clinics will “start from scratch” – focusing on throws, catches, marking, and cutting. It is a great progression for the beginners as well as useful practice for the veterans. The first clinic starts on Sunday April 11th at Merkley Park at 5:30PM. Part 2 of the Clinic Series will be on Thursday, April 15th at 5:30PM at Alexander Robinson Elementary School.
League Games
Starting on Sunday, April 18th (5:30PM at Merkley Park) our season begins! The first two league games will begin with a “team practice” for the first 45 minutes to go over strategies and make the new players feel more comfortable. The common format will then be: warm-up, play lots of Ulti, have a post-game drink while making up a team cheer for the other team. The team rosters will be created during the Clinic Series week. Spirited Players of the Game will be closely tracked this year, posted on the website, and given weekly prizes – I hope it is obvious that Spirit is the backbone of our league!!

Start checking the website more often! League information, disc golf games, and other social events are posted daily. Our Webmaster, Benedict Canale, will continually be updating the site and making sure that inappropriate material is everywhere.
Spirit of the Game
Maple Ridge Ultimate has consistently received praise for our high level of competitiveness and intoxicating Spirit! But like any World Class League, we must continue to build on that reputation. Each team chooses a Most Spirited Player and a Most Valuable Player. Then off for a burger, beer, prizes and good company!
“The only reason I play Ultimate is for the Sunday night party!” – Mike.
Hat Tournament
Saturday, June 19th at Albion Park – our 5th annual tournament! Building on the momentum of last year’s HUGE success, this tournament is a wicked combination of Ultimate, Cups, socializing, BBQ and cold beer! This year’s highlights will include the introduction of flippie cups and jello-shooter-slip-n-slide.
Disc Golf
If any of you have not been to the Thornhill Disc Golf course yet, you have got to make the trip! Many of us play every Saturday and Sunday (and as the days get longer – during the week) and would love to have a “newbie” out to learn the course. It’s free, it’s fun, bring a regular disc or borrow a golf disc, and throw a few “travelers” in the cooler! There is a link in the forum on our site that can be used to nail down dates/times for future games.
And Finally – Spread the Word!
Bring out a friend or family member that has never even heard of Ultimate. Last year, our league was made up of 20% brand new players – and during the year, the improvement was simply amazing! The Thursday Clinics and Sunday games will get any player familiar with the game, improve their physical fitness, and introduce them to a great bunch of people. Here in Maple Ridge, it’s not Ultimate…..it’s CULTIMATE!
See you on March 27th!
